BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/ bcr-2014-204962 DESCRIPTION Palmar and plantar fibromatosis are benign, painless thickening in the aponeurosis of the hands and feet, respectively. Both forms of superficial fibromatoses can manifest as single or multiple nodular swellings resulting from localised proliferation of abnormal fibrous tissue in sites of predilection. Although, the rheumatological and characteristics imaging features of these rare diseases are well documented in literature, there are no reports of an oral manifestation. We report a 54-year-old woman who presented at the oral medicine clinic with widespread, discrete and multiple polyp like nodules of variable size scattered on the dorsal surface, lateral borders and tip of the tongue (figure 1A–C) Physical examination revealed Dupuytren’s contractures on the palmar surfaces of both hands (figure 1D, G) and on the plantar surface of the right foot (figure 1E). In addition, a painless, firm and fixed nodule (knuckle pad) was observed on the plantar aspect of the left foot (figure 1H). This was despite previous surgical intervention which resulted in the loss of a toe digit (figure 1F) and a postoperative scar (figure 1I). Although asymptomatic, the patient expressed concern about the risk of malignant transformation arising from the oral manifestation reported in this article. She was reassured that the risk was very low. Regular follow-up was initiated to monitor any further changes that may arise.

[Plantar fibromatosis and Dupuytren's contracture in an adolescent].

BACKGROUND Fibromatosis represents a wide group of benign, locally proliferative disorders of fibroblasts. Dupuytren's disease is a benign proliferative disease of palmar aponeurosis which usually affects adults between 40 and 60 years of age. Ledderhose's disease or plantar fibromatosis is plantar equivalent of Dupuyten's disease most often affecting middle-aged and older men, usually bilatera...

Palmar-plantar fibromatosis in children and preadolescents: a clinicopathologic study of 56 cases with newly recognized demographics and extended follow-up information.

Palmar-plantar fibromatosis, the most common type of fibromatosis, is well recognized in the adult population, but many clinicians and pathologists are unfamiliar with the fact that children may also be affected by this process. This report describes the clinicopathologic findings in 56 cases of palmar-plantar fibromatosis in children and preadolescents. Our study group included 19 males and 37...

Dupuytren’s and Ledderhose Diseases in a Family with LMNA-Related Cardiomyopathy and a Novel Variant in the ASTE1 Gene

Dupuytren's disease (palmar fibromatosis) involves nodules in fascia of the hand that leads to flexion contractures. Ledderhose disease (plantar fibromatosis) is similar with nodules of the foot. While clinical aspects are well-described, genetic mechanisms are unknown. We report a family with cardiac disease due to a heterozygous LMNA mutation (c.736C>T, p.Gln246Stop) with palmar/plantar fibro...

Plantar fibromatosis: an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study.

The analogies between plantar fibromatosis and Dupuytren's disease (palmar fibromatosis) are well known. The latter is clinically more frequent and has been the object of extensive immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies, with a view to investigating its pathogenesis. By contrast, such data on plantar fibromatosis are quite scarce. A histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructur...

Imaging Features of Superficial and Deep Fibromatoses in the Adult Population

The fibromatoses are a group of benign fibroblastic proliferations that vary from benign to intermediate in biological behavior. This article will discuss imaging characteristics and patient demographics of the adult type superficial (fascial) and deep (musculoaponeurotic) fibromatoses. The imaging appearance of these lesions can be characteristic (particularly when using magnetic resonance ima...
